Why Austria Should Be Your Next Christmas Market Escape (Vienna, Salzburg & Kitzbühel)

Salzburg, Austria

Switzerland isn’t the only place you’ll find magical christmas markets

Austria is an underrated gem and a more affordable alternative to Switzerland for winter activities. Not only does Austria offer budget-friendly skiing options, but it’s also home to some of the most enchanting Christmas markets that will make you feel like you’ve stepped right into a Hallmark holiday movie. Here are the top three cities to visit for a magical Christmas experience in Austria, plus a hidden holiday gem nearby that you won’t want to miss

*Christmas market dates vary, so be sure to check their opening days and times. Generally, they’re open from November until just after Christmas which is perfect for planning your festive getaway!

Vienna Christmas Markets:

1. Christkindlmarkt on the Rathausplatz:

This market was hands-down the best Christmas experience I’ve ever had. It was a true winter wonderland, made even more magical by the snow that fell as we arrived.

Home to authentic craft shops, gift stalls, and souvenirs, this market also features an ice-skating rink that twists and turns across the square, all set against the stunning backdrop of Vienna’s City Hall. As you wander, you can indulge in mulled wine, hot chocolate, and Wiener Schnitzels, with carousels, Ferris wheels, and light displays bringing the festive spirit to life.

Rathausplatz Christmas Market in Vienna

There’s so much to see and do here, you could easily spend hours soaking in the holiday magic. From the bottom of my heart, I recommend this market for a truly unforgettable winter experience.

2. Belvedere Christmas Market

We visited this market on our last night in Vienna, and its calm, laid-back vibe was a refreshing change from the buzz of Rathausplatz. Nestled against the beautiful Belvedere Palace, the market features charming shops, delicious foods, and drinks to warm you up on a chilly winter night.

Although smaller and quieter, it’s perfect for finding unique souvenirs and gifts without the hustle and bustle. If you’re looking for a relaxed yet festive experience, this one’s for you.

3. Stephansplatz Christmas Market

We stumbled upon this market by accident while heading to the city center on our first night. Surrounding St. Stephen’s Cathedral, this market is both breathtaking and worth your time.

The vibe here is a happy medium between the bustling Rathausplatz and the relaxed Belvedere. With a variety of shops and food stalls, you can explore at your own pace while still enjoying a lively atmosphere. Grab a mulled wine or hot chocolate, find a spot to chat with friends, and soak in the festive energy.

Vienna offers a fantastic variety of holiday markets, and we managed to explore all three during our stay. With a little planning, you can easily enjoy a taste of each one, too!

Salzburg:

Salzburg, located just on the other side of the country from Vienna, is a great destination to visit for a perfect mix of rich history, stunning architecture, and a festive holiday atmosphere. Salzburg surprised us with its calm, charming Christmas market, decorated with beautiful lights that gave the city a magical glow. Known for its ties to Mozart and music history, Salzburg is a must-visit for culture lovers. We even attended an orchestra concert held in a castle—how unique is that?

The market itself stretches through the city’s streets, providing plenty of space to browse and explore. Be sure to visit Salzburg Cathedral while you’re there, it’s absolutely worth it.

Kitzbühel:

Kitzbühel is a quaint ski town recommended to us for its affordable slopes and breathtaking views. The town’s Christmas market is equally charming, with stalls lining the streets and cozy areas to sip drinks and chat with friends. What stood out here was the chance to actually connect with shop owners—no rush, no crowds, just genuine conversations. If you’re after a peaceful holiday vibe, this little gem is perfect.

Prague Christmas Market

Just a four-hour journey from Vienna lies the enchanting capital of the Czech Republic—Prague.

The Christmas markets here were an unexpected delight, especially since we visited after Christmas and found them still in full swing! Set in Prague’s Old Town Square, the markets are nestled near the famous Astronomical Clock, which puts on a charming show every hour, and the breathtaking Church of Our Lady before Týn. The stunning backdrop makes the experience feel straight out of a fairy tale.

These markets offer a mix of delicious food, warm drinks, handcrafted souvenirs, and unique gifts. One thing you absolutely must try is the chimney cone—freshly baked over an open flame, this warm, sweet dessert is pure comfort on a cold winter’s day.

Overall

The Christmas experience in Europe is truly one-of-a-kind, and I guarantee you’ll find plenty of comfort and holiday cheer at these recommended markets. As I mentioned earlier, these destinations are not only budget-friendly for accommodations and activities, but the Christmas markets add that extra sprinkle of holiday magic. I truly hope you get the chance to visit and experience the unforgettable holiday spirit for yourself!
