Switzerland is known for its world-class ski resorts, but not all of them have to break the bank. If you’re in Zurich and looking for a budget-friendly ski trip, Stoos and Hoch Ybrig are two fantastic options that offer breathtaking Alpine views, well-maintained slopes, and easy access via public transportation.
Stoos
Why Ski at Stoos?
Just 1 hour and 20 minutes from Zurich’s main station by train and bus, Stoos is a family-friendly ski resort with slopes ranging from moderate to challenging. Even if you’re not tackling black diamond runs, you’ll still get to enjoy some of the most stunning panoramic views in the Swiss Alps.

Ski Tips from Personal Experience
- European ski trail signs may look familiar to those in the U.S., but the Alps can feel more intense. Assume that a trail is one level harder than what you’re used to.
- Alpine ski trails here are longer than you might expect, with some around 20 minutes to descend from the top. Gondola rides are also longer than expected, but the views make them worth it.
- My first blue run felt endless, so pace yourself and take breaks if needed!

Why Ski at Hoch-Ybrig?
Hoch Ybrig quickly became one of my favorite ski destinations in Europe. The resort offers a variety of intermediate slopes with stunning panoramic views that honestly felt like looking at a green screen. The trails here are slightly shorter than those at Stoos, but lift rides are quicker, allowing you to spend more time skiing and less time waiting in lines.
One of the highlights? Enjoying a cozy mountain-top lunch with rich hot chocolate. This made for the perfect mid-ski break.
