Amalfi Coast in the same sentence as peace and space? 

The Amalfi Coast is often known for its breathtaking views, vibrant towns, and packed streets. But what if I told you there’s a way to experience this iconic destination without feeling crammed like sardines? If you’re looking for a more relaxed, stress-free vacation with room to breathe, I have just the itinerary for you.

While Positano and Amalfi are the two most famous destinations along the coast, they’re not your only options. The Amalfi Coast is lined with charming towns that hold equally stunning views but fewer crowds and more affordable prices. With ferries and buses making transportation easy, staying outside the major hotspots is not only manageable but also gives you a chance to see the coast from a fresh perspective.

Minori and Maiori.

After some research, we landed on Maiori. Maiori is a hidden gem offering affordability, a touch of old-fashioned luxury, and amazing sea views. We stayed in a beautiful bed-and-breakfast that checked all the boxes: comfortable, budget-friendly, and perfectly located for exploring.

Minori and Maiori are ideal for travelers seeking a more local feel. Unlike Positano, where you’ll spend your days climbing stairs or navigating narrow, crowded streets, these towns are flat, accessible, and filled with family-owned beach clubs. The vibe is relaxed, and you’ll enjoy more authentic experiences without the touristy price tags.

From our accommodation, we simply walked down the main strip to the beach, rented a chair and umbrella, and spent the day lounging alongside locals. It was the perfect oppourtunity to soak up the sun while taking in the calm, scenic atmosphere.

Exploring the Amalfi Coast from Maiori

One of the highlights of staying in Maiori is how easily you can explore the rest of the Amalfi Coast.

Maiori to Positano

• 45-minute ferry
• 1 hour 30 minutes by bus

Maiori to Amalfi

• 20-minute bus ride
• 27-minute ferry

Maiori to Ravello

• 40-minute bus ride

Positano & Amalfi: Our itinerary along the Amalfi Coast started with a ferry ride to Positano, where we spent most of the day exploring. From the port, we followed the street upward, stopping at CB, before making our way back towards the beach to lounge. We sat at the public beach and enjoyed some pizza from a food stand nearby (absolutely delicious), then made our journey back up the hill to this bus stop. It’s definitely a workout, but worth the views as you ascend!

We then hopped on a bus to Amalfi for dinner, where we had delicious pasta at Ristorante L’Abside. The Amalfi Coast is renowned for it’s lemons, so of course I treated myself to the most delicious lemon infused pasta dish. Taking the bus back to Maiori is a breeze from Amalfi, and a great time to regroup from the busy day!

Ravello: Located just above Minori, Ravello is another must-see destination. A short bus ride takes you to this enchanting hilltop town, where you’ll find some of the most breathtaking views on the coast. Don’t miss Hotel Villa Fraulo, a hidden gem recommended by our tour guide. This restaurant, perched above the clouds, serves incredible dishes with panoramic views stretching over Minori, Maiori, and beyond. It was so good that I went twice!

Summer Savings: 

Staying in Minori or Maiori not only gives you a more peaceful experience but also saves you money. The savings on accommodations mean more to spend on sightseeing, dining, and transportation. Instead of splurging on overpriced hotels in Positano, explore the locally-owned bed-and-breakfasts or guesthouses in these quieter towns.

Breakfast included? That’s great, but don’t skip the chance to explore local bakeries and pastry shops. Supporting small businesses while indulging in fresh, authentic treats is a win-win.

Beach Talk: 

Public beaches in Positano and Amalfi might sound appealing, but they’re often crowded. On my first visit to Positano, I opted for the public beach to save money and quickly realized I’d need to make friends because you’ll be up close and personal with your fellow sunbathers.

If you plan to spend a full day at the beach, I recommend splurging on a beach club. It’s worth the expense for a more comfortable experience, especially in Positano. However, if you’re in towns like Maiori, you’ll find beach clubs that are much cheaper and filled with locals, giving you a more immersive experience.

Pro tip: Don’t bring valuables to public beaches. Alberto and I had to take turns swimming because we were nervous about leaving our belongings unattended in Positano.

Other Options: 

If you’re considering a base outside the Amalfi Coast, Sorrento is a fantastic option. While it’s a popular tourist hub, it’s well-connected to the Amalfi Coast by ferry and bus. Plus, Sorrento itself is full of charm, great dining options, and lively streets to explore.

The Amalfi Coast is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful places in the world, but you don’t need to stick to the beaten path to enjoy it. By choosing quieter towns like Minori and Maiori, you can experience the beauty of the coast at your own pace, away from the hustle and bustle.
