Sicily Beyond Palermo: Mondello, Cefalù, & Monreale Guide

Cefalù, Sicily

Sicily, an island just off the coast of Italy, is the perfect spot for an unforgettable Italian island getaway. From stunning beaches to the thrill of hiking Mount Etna, the island offers a wide range of breathtaking cities and diverse landscapes. While there’s so much to see, if you’re short on time, I highly recommend staying in Palermo. Not only does it offer a great base to explore, but it also helps keep your trip affordable.

During our stay in Palermo, we were able to easily explore a variety of nearby destinations thanks to its unique location and convenient transportation options. From panoramic views high above the city to hidden beaches and scattered islands off Northern Sicily’s coast, there’s so much to discover. I’m excited to share the ultimate day trips that will make your time in Palermo and Sicily truly unforgettable.

About Palermo:

The lively city always has something awaiting you throughout the day. Amazing food, fresh food markets that line the streets, beautiful museums with rich history, the Palermo Cathedral, Teatro Massimo, shopping, nightlife, and beach. It has it all.

Sicily is a huge island and Palermo is only one of the many cities that make up the island. Although Palermo was wonderful and full of so many things to do, there was more beyond the city that was waiting to be explored.

Here are 3 must-see locations during your stay in Palermo to go beyond the city borders!

Mondello is a beautiful location to relax on the beach, which is about an hour bus ride from Palermo. Originally we planned to go to a beach club in Mondello, so we left at 9 am, but to our surprise, it wasn’t early enough to get a spot at the beach club. There is a strip of sand in front of all the beach clubs which personally I think was better than paying for the beach clubs since you had to pass that area from the beach club to get to the water.

We won! It was relaxing but hot, so thankfully the crystal clear water was the perfect cool down.

As for food and drinks, you can order at the beach clubs or there are nearby deli shops to get some sandwiches and drinks to bring and enjoy on the beach. Don’t forget to pick up your trash and throw it all away. The water wouldn’t be that clear if it wasn’t for picking up after yourself.

Cefalù is a stunning coastal village, just an hour’s scenic train ride along Sicily’s northern coast from Palermo. It’s the perfect spot for a beach day, offering fresh seafood, breathtaking views, and charming streets waiting to be explored.

With its golden beachfront framed by lush green mountains and colorful seaside buildings, Cefalù couldn’t be more picturesque. And if you’re looking for authentic, rich sfogliatella you’ll find delicious options around Piazza del Duomo.

One of our first stops was the Cefalù Cathedral, a beautiful and historic landmark. Beyond that, the town is filled with unique shops selling everything from ceramics to clothing and accessories. Honestly, getting lost in the streets of Cefalù is an adventure in itself.

Pro Tip: During the summer, most cathedrals require you to cover your shoulders! Vendors outside sometimes sell cloth ponchos for as little as €1, but other times tough luck, so be prepared!

For the beach, you can rent lounge chairs and an umbrella, or, like us, bring your own towel and relax in the general area by Spiaggia del Porto Vecchio. If you’re up for a little adventure, head toward Molo di Cefalù, a jetty-like dock with stunning views of the town and the perfect spot to dive into the crystal-clear waters, surrounded by the thrill and laughter of fellow jumpers.

While in Cefalù, we were drawn to the local vendors offering boat excursions and we found the perfect one! Our boat trip took us to three breathtaking islands off the coast of Sicily: Lipari, Vulcano, and Filicudi. It was an unforgettable experience, and thanks to the tour, we were able to fit so much into one day. If you’re looking to do this on your own, it may take a little more planning, but it’s definitely worth looking into!

Monreale is a charming hillside town that offers breathtaking panoramic views of Palermo, the coastline, and the mountain ranges stretching across Sicily.

The town’s highlight is its stunning cathedral, Cattedrale di Monreale, a must-visit spot surrounded by fantastic restaurants that aren’t just tourist traps. I highly recommend paying to go up to the cathedral’s rooftop because the views from the top are absolutely worth it!

This day trip can easily be done in half a day, but we met people on the bus returning for a second day just to have lunch, swearing that Monreale had the best food they’d had in Sicily.

Beyond the cathedral, Monreale’s ceramic shops are worth exploring, and the winding streets make for a great walk if you’re looking to go off the beaten path.
